Academician Bahri Beci is a personality with multiple activities in different fields of historical and contemporary Albanian linguistics for more than six decades; author of dozens of monographic and study works in the field of dialectology, phonetics, grammar, the training path of unified Albanian, the history of the Albanian language and its status in the Balkan linguistic connection.

He was a member of the Academy of Sciences and an external member of the Kosovo Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Bahri Beci was born in Shkodër in 1936, in a patriotic family. After graduating from the university in 1958, he was appointed scientific researcher at the Institute of Linguistics and Literature, where he held important managerial positions, such as department head and project leader, scientific secretary and director.

In order to train a new generation of researchers, Bahri Beci went to specialize to Paris, where he obtained his doctorate with the topic “Le système vocalique et consonantique du parler de la ville de Shkodër” (“Vocal system and consonant of the spoken of the city of Shkodër).

Back in Tirana, he completed his first degree thesis with the study “Dialects of the northern median” and his second degree thesis with the study “North-western Albanian dialects” and the “Phonetic system of the dialect of Shkodër”.

Bahri Beci’s university activity extends to several countries, including the INALCO Institute of Oriental Languages ​​and Civilizations in Paris. Bahri Beci is a member of the Academy of Sciences of Albania (2008) and an external member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosova and of the editorial board of Atlas Linguarum Europae (ALE).

The main field of scientific research activity of Bahri Beci was the history of dialects and sub-dialects of Albanian. Within this problem, dialectological studies for the north-western and central dialects of Albanian of Shkodër and Dibër have had a central space.

Bahri Beci participated as a delegate and signatory of the Resolution of the Orthography Congress (1972) and is the author of two monographic studies on the unifying processes in the formation of today’s literary Albanian. As a researcher in Balkan linguistics, Bahri Beci has made his mark with his contributions to the position of the Albanian language in the inter-Balkans linguistic connection.

Bahri Beci synthesized his opera achievements through works of normative character. His scientific work is characterized by the scholar’s synergy in the research expedition and at the same time in a profound process of his contemporary western formation.
