President Bajram Begaj attended the final stage of the “Arber Shield 2026” exercise in Bizë. The Light Infantry Battalion Group completed the exercise and received a “Mission Capable” certification under NATO standards.

Speaking at the ceremony, Begaj praised the Armed Forces for their high level of training, discipline and professionalism. He said the certification reflects the progress made by Albania’s military.

“Today, here in Bizë, you demonstrated a high level of tactical readiness. You also showed resilience and strong military character. You proved your ability to plan, coordinate and operate in a complex environment,” Begaj said.

Moreover, the President stressed that military readiness requires constant training and professionalism.

Against this backdrop, Begaj pointed to the growing security challenges facing the region. He cited the war in Ukraine, tensions in the Middle East, hybrid threats, cyberattacks and disinformation.

He said these risks also affect the Western Balkans. Therefore, he called for stronger defence capabilities to protect national security.

“The resurgence of nationalism, divisive rhetoric and ethnic tensions can undermine peace and stability in the region. Malicious actors can also exploit our vulnerabilities. For this reason, we must invest in security before insecurity reaches our doors,” Begaj said.

He added that peace requires more than political statements. It also depends on military readiness, regular training, strong alliances and well-equipped forces.

Furthermore, Begaj highlighted Albania’s strategic partnership with the United States and its cooperation with NATO. He said Albanian forces can operate alongside allied troops whenever required.

“Being assessed as ‘Mission Capable’ is not simply a title that remains in the archives of an exercise. It reflects the real ability to deploy and operate effectively wherever and whenever required, alongside our allies,” Begaj said.

Meanwhile, the President highlighted the importance of investment in the defence industry. He also pointed to the modernisation of military structures, the development of capabilities and improvements in infrastructure.

Begaj credited Albania’s NATO allies for supporting the development of the Armed Forces. In particular, he praised the strategic partnership with the United States.

“The achievements of our Armed Forces would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our NATO allies. I particularly value our strategic partnership with the United States. American support has been continuous and decisive in strengthening our defence capabilities,” Begaj said.

On the occasion, Begaj also expressed his gratitude to the New Jersey National Guard. He conveyed the message through its commander, Brigadier General Yvonne L. Mays, who attended the ceremony.

Finally, Begaj assured military personnel of his support for initiatives that improve their working conditions, careers and wellbeing. He also pledged support for the wellbeing of their families.
