Bulgaria: “We do not change our position on Macedonia. We support Albania on its path to the EU”

“Bulgaria will not lift its veto on the start of negotiations between the Republic of North Macedonia and the EU, but on the other hand it is ready to support Albania on its path to the Union,” that is the announcement coming from the Bulgarian transitional government cabinet of caretaker Prime Minister Stefan Janev before attending the European Council on 14 December. Bulgaria will be represented by President Rumen Radev, if a regular government is not elected in the 47th parliament by then, INA reports.

“Bulgaria will adhere to the Declaration of the National Assembly of October 10, 2019 regarding the EU enlargement and the Stabilization and Association Process of the Republic of North Macedonia and the Republic of Albania, as well as the framework position for the European perspective.

For Bulgaria, the basic principle of merit of each candidate remains crucial. “Bulgaria believes that Albania is ready for progress on the road to the EU and is ready to support the approval of the Negotiating Framework for the country and the holding of the first Intergovernmental Conference,” said the Council of Ministers.

According to reports, Bulgaria will defend this position at the meeting of the General Affairs Council to be held on December 14 in Brussels.
