Catalan media MónTerrassa highlights Albania’s Vjosa River

Catalan digital media outlet MónTerrassa has published an article by Alejandro Martín-Sanz de Santamaría highlighting Albania’s Vjosa River as a destination for nature and adventure tourism. The article explores the river’s free-flowing waters, dramatic canyons, thermal springs and rich biodiversity.

It describes the Vjosa as one of Europe’s rare rivers that retain their natural flow without major dams or barriers. In 2023, Albania designated it Europe’s first Wild River National Park, following nearly three decades of efforts to prevent dam and hydropower projects that threatened its ecosystem.

The article also outlines the river’s ecological importance. Its basin supports more than 1,600 species and provides habitat for around 300 bird species. Meanwhile, the river’s natural flow and sediment transport continually shape its banks, islands and habitats.

Beyond its environmental value, the Vjosa offers visitors opportunities for rafting and kayaking around Përmet. The article also highlights the Bënja thermal springs, the historic Ottoman bridge of Kadiu and the Langarica Canyon. Further downstream, Tepelena Castle and the landscapes of the Myzeqe plain add to the region’s appeal.

The author stresses that long-term protection requires continued monitoring and effective conservation measures. The article presents the Vjosa as an example of how river protection can support biodiversity while creating opportunities for sustainable tourism and local development.
