Christmas traditions in Albania

TIRANA, December 25 – Christmas remained one of the most important celebrations for Christian believers in Albania. The holiday brought families together and strengthened shared traditions.
Before 1990, the communist dictatorship banned all religious celebrations. During that period, families marked New Year’s Eve as the main festive event. Albanians used the Christmas tree as a New Year symbol, a tradition that continued even after religious freedom returned.
After the fall of the regime, Christmas celebrations gradually expanded across the country. Families decorated Christmas trees with lights, stars, and ornaments. The tree symbolized joy and hope and created a warm atmosphere in homes.
At the same time, traditional food played a central role in the celebration. Families prepared roasted meat, appetizers, and salads. Desserts included baklava and Christmas panettone. The shared table strengthened family unity during the holiday.
In addition, table decoration received special attention. Families used red, white, gold, and silver colors. Candles and festive table settings completed the arrangement.
Preparations also included religious observance. Many believers attended Christmas Eve Mass. They celebrated the birth of Jesus and prayed for peace and blessings for the new year.
Meanwhile, solidarity marked the holiday across the country. Families exchanged visits during Christmas Day. At the same time, believers distributed gifts to people in need, highlighting the spirit of humanism.
