Today marks the 80th anniversary of the birth of Ibrahim Rugova (1944-2006), Kosovo’s first president, founder of the Democratic League of Kosovo, and a prominent scholar.

Born on December 2, 1944, in Cerrë, Istog, Rugova completed his secondary education in Pejë in 1967 and went on to study Albanian language and literature at the University of Prishtina. From 1976 to 1977, he pursued further studies at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris, and in 1984, he earned his doctorate in literature from the University of Prishtina. Between 1988 and 1990, he served as the scientific secretary at the Albanological Institute of Prishtina. Rugova was a prolific writer, with significant publications including “Vepra e Bogdanit 1675-1685” (Prishtina, 1982), “Kahe dhe premisa të kritikës letrare shqiptare 1504-1983” (Prishtina, 1986), and “Refuzim estetik” (Prishtina, 1987), along with numerous studies in literary theory, criticism, and Albanian culture.

In 1988, Rugova became president of the Kosovo Writers’ Association. Following the formation of the Democratic League of Kosovo in 1989, he served as its president until 2005. He was also elected president of the Coordinating Council of Albanian Political Parties of Kosovo in 1991.

In 1992, Rugova was elected President of the Republic of Kosovo in the first direct elections. He was re-elected for additional terms in 2002 and 2004.

Rugova was honored with numerous international awards, including the Paul Litzer Peace Prize (1995) in Denmark and the Peace Award from the Democratic Union of Catalonia “Manuel Carrosco i Farmiguera.” Following his death, he was posthumously awarded the “Order of the National Banner” by the President of the Republic of Albania, Alfred Moisiu. Ibrahim Rugova passed away in Prishtina on January 21, 2006.
