On January 24, 1844, Ismail Qemali, the Father of the Albanian Nation, was born in Vlora.

A leader of the Albanian National Movement, he played a pivotal role in advancing Albania’s independence and cultural identity. After completing his education at the “Zosimea” Gymnasium in Ioannina, Qemali held various high-ranking positions in the Ottoman administration but eventually faced exile due to his opposition to Sultan Abdul Hamid II’s policies.

In Europe, he actively advocated for Albania’s autonomy and worked to unify the Albanian alphabet and promote national culture. On November 28, 1912, Qemali presided over the National Assembly in Vlora, where he declared Albania’s independence and raised the national flag. He became the first Prime Minister of the Provisional Government and Minister of Foreign Affairs, taking decisive steps to establish the foundations of the independent Albanian state.

Qemali remains celebrated as a visionary leader who tirelessly championed Albania’s sovereignty and national identity.
