The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, present at the ceremony organized in honor of the 110th anniversary of the birth of doctor Koço Gliozheni, said that a good city should always be remembered for its figures.

“The number one asset is people, then we can do good and good things for this city. We are happy that in the Municipal Council we have a representative from the Maternity Hospital of Tirana, to remind us where life begins”, Veliaj said.

The Minister of Health, Ogerta Manastirliu said: “I am honored that we are commemorating Professor Koço Gliozhenin. A man who contributed to Albanian medicine, contributed to the field of obstetrics and gynecology, as a pioneer and a person who made a revolution in medicine. Today, we are united precisely by the strength of the example of a man who devoted his whole life to medicine, to service and to the patient, to the birth and dedication of what we all hold most sacred, namely the lives of our children. I am pleased that we commemorate the 110th anniversary of the birth of Professor Koço Gliozheni, because by commemorating him, we remember and see the whole constellation of those people, professors who have contributed to Albanian medicine.”

Koço Gliozheni, Albanian gynecologist, was born on July 27, 1913 in Korça. He completed his studies in medicine and specialization in surgery and obstetrics – gynecology at the University of Athens. He first worked with his father and then by himself, as a general practitioner, but also as a surgeon and gynecologist. In 1949, Koço Gliozheni moved to Tirana and in 1951 he was appointed Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology University Hospital of Tirana. In addition to the activity as a gynecologist in this institution, he opened his own clinic (“Gliozheni Clinic”) in 1951, which was one of the most popular and frequented structures of that time in Tirana in the specialty of obstetrics – gynecology. With the opening of the University of Tirana in 1957, Koço Gliozheni was appointed Head of the Department of Obstetrics – Gynecology, a position he held until his retirement in 1989. In 1958, he was awarded the title of Professor, together with the group of 7 professors of first of Albania. The clinic was closed in the early 60’s as a result of the government’s decision to no longer allow private medical activity in Albania. The Korçë District Council has honored him with the title “Korçë District Honor” (posthumously).
