Congress of Albanian Language Orthography marked as cornerstone of national identity

TIRANA, November 20 – The National History Museum today commemorated a scientific gathering that became one of the most important nationwide events, the Congress of Albanian Language Orthography. The museum described the congress as a cornerstone for national identity and unity.
The congress began on November 20, 1972, in Tirana and concluded on November 25, 1972. It represented the final phase of a process that started in 1967 after the publication of the Rules of Albanian Orthography. The process aimed to establish the fundamental principles for the final standardization of the Albanian language.
Eighty-seven delegates participated in the congress. They came from all Albanian regions and the Arbëresh communities in Italy. The delegates included linguists, teachers, writers, publishers, and notable figures in education and culture.
During the six days of the congress, the delegates delivered over 150 scientific presentations.
The congress established the final standardization of the Albanian language. It created a unified literary norm for all Albanians. The museum noted that this norm became the foundation for education, literature, scientific publications, and official communication. It also had a profound impact on cultural life and strengthened national unity.
