Delimitation maritime zones issue/Begaj receives the request from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

President Bajram Begaj has informed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent him a report regarding the Sea Issues with Greece. Begaj explained that he appreciates the Ministry’s request for his “approval”, for the selection of the Albanian negotiating group and the start of discussions with the Greek side, with maximum intensity.
Begaj’s positive statement, during the joint conference with the Polish counterpart, will pave the way for discussions between the Albanian and Greek sides, to send their proposals on the sea issue to The Hague.
“I said thank God that we don’t have problems between the two countries. We currently have an issue with neighboring Greece. Yes, it is true that I have a request from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that is accompanied by a report. As president, I appreciate this request with maximum intensity and finding a solution that will be based on the decision of the Constitutional Court, the acts of international agreement, the rules of good neighborliness. Greece is a strategic partner of the country”, said Begaj.
On October 20, 2020, Albania confirmed that it has agreed with Greece to refer to the Court of The Hague, to resolve the issue of delimitation of maritime zones between the two countries, the review of which at the international court in The Hague was confirmed during the visit to Tirana of to the Foreign Minister of Greece, Nikos Dendias.
