Dialogu/ Tanja Fajon: The EU expects Serbia and Kosovo to reach a compromise by April, before the local elections

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia, Tanja Fajon, said today that the European Union expects Serbia and Kosovo to reach a compromise in dialogue until April of this year, when the local elections in the municipalities in the north of Kosovo are scheduled.
“It is very important not to have further escalation of tensions. It is very important for us and for the whole European community to see that both sides are really committed to finding a compromise before the local elections in April. It is important to do everything to normalize the situation and the dialogue led by the European Union must continue”, said Fajon.
She emphasized that she received guarantees from the politicians of Prishtina that they are ready to start the talks based on the Franco-German proposal as soon as possible.

Fajon added that the parties are also required to implement the agreements from the previous dialogue, including the one for the formation of the Association of Serbian Municipalities.
“The dialogue must continue and all agreements must be fulfilled, including the establishment of the Community of Serb Municipalities(ZSO). This is very important in the coming weeks, months. For this reason, I have reiterated the positions that the authorities of Kosovo and of course Serbia must do everything to normalize the situation and prevent further escalation”, said Fajon.
Asked about the unofficial documents that talk about the division and exchange of territories, which were previously published in Slovenia, Fajon said that such discussions are dangerous and against European values.

“It is important that Kosovo and Serbia finalize the agreement, especially the Brussels agreement from 2013, which has many points that must be fulfilled. The elections are a few weeks away and I tried to encourage and convince the Kosovo authorities that they really care about the Serbian communities and municipalities, so that the citizens feel safe, so that they don’t fear the Kosovo authorities,” Fajon said.
