Tirana, October 13 – Dritëro Agolli (1931–2017), a leading figure in Albanian literature and culture, was born on October 13, 1931.

He was a poet, prose writer, journalist, and politician. His works brought a fresh spirit to Albanian literature. He captured everyday life, the land, peasants, and the soul of the people with sensitivity.

For many years, Agolli led the League of Writers and Artists of Albania. He assumed the position in 1973 and shaped the country’s cultural and artistic development. He also worked as a journalist for the newspaper “Zëri i Popullit.”

Agolli wrote poetry, poems, short stories, novels, dramas, and film scripts. His most notable poetic work is “Nënë Shqipëri” (Mother Albania), highlighting the heroic traditions of Albania. In prose, he became known for “Komisari Memo” (Bronze Bust), “Shkëlqimi dhe rënia e shokut Zylo” (The Rise and Fall of Comrade Zylo) and “Njeriu me top” (The Man with the Gun). His final work was the poetry book “Prit edhe pak” (Wait a Little More), dedicated to his wife Sadije.

The giant of Albanian literature passed away at the age of 85 on February 3, 2017.
