Durres Biennale Turns Coastal City into Contemporary Art Stage

The second International Durres Biennale of Contemporary Art is turning the coastal city into an open stage for art, dialogue and cultural exchange throughout October. The event brings together 45 artists and 34 national pavilions from countries including Italy, Germany, China, Brazil, Kosovo, Togo, Uganda, Vietnam and New Zealand.

This year’s theme, “Periphery: Visual Transitions,” explores social change, shifting spaces and how contemporary art interprets these transformations. Exhibitions and workshops take place across 11 cultural venues, including the former Royal Villa, the Medieval Hamam, the National Archaeological Museum and the home of actor Aleksander Moisiu.

Deputy Culture Minister Lira Pipa said the Biennale strengthens cultural cooperation and connects communities through art. The event brings artists, curators and international partners together while placing contemporary art in direct dialogue with Durres’ history and urban life.
