Durrës-Prishtina Railway: Deputy PM Balluku Announces Completion of Feasibility Study, Clearing the Path for Implementation

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku, announced today that the feasibility study and preliminary design for the Durrës-Prishtina national railway have been completed.

Balluku revealed that the report was presented to teams from both Kosova and Albania.

“The report, presented by the consultant in the presence of both Kosova and Albanian teams, now clears the way for the realization of this major infrastructure project, which is crucial for both the nation and the region’s economy. The ‘Red and Black Railway’,” stated Balluku.

The railway connecting Durrës to Prishtina is of great significance, not only as a key commercial transport route linking the Port of Durrës with the dry port of Prishtina, but also as an alternative transportation option for passengers traveling between the two countries.

While this railway does not fall within European transport corridors like the Vora-Hani i Hotit or Durrës-Pogradec segments, both governments are committed to the project. With the completion of the feasibility study, an international tender will be launched, a combined effort between the two countries, to start construction on this long-anticipated project.

The railway linking Albania and Kosovo is expected to partially follow the route of the future Vora-Hani i Hotit railway.

The planned route will begin in Durrës, pass through Shkodër, continue through Gjakova, and ultimately reach Prishtina.
