Efforts to de-escalate the situation with Serbia, Lajcak to meet with Osmani and Kurti today

The European Union’s special envoy for dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak visits Kosova this Tuesday, in an effort to de-escalate the situation between Prishtina and Belgrade.

At 15:00 Lajcak will be received in a meeting by President Vjosa Osmani and will also meet with Prime Minister Albin Kurti.

Lajcak’s visit to Kosova is the second in a month, as we recall that on June 5, when the special envoy of the European Union for dialogue, together with the American envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, traveled to Kosova where they met with Prime Minister Albin Kurti and where they presented the proposal on behalf of the international community that contained three elements, which consisted of the recent developments in the north, ideas for de-escalating the situation and the urgency of implementing the Prishtina-Belgrade Agreement.

After the visit to Kosova, Lajcak is expected to travel to Belgrade, where he is also expected to meet with President Aleksandar Vucic.

The tensions between Kosova and Serbia increased even more on May 26, with the election of 4 mayors of municipalities in the North, North Mitrovica, Zvecan, Zubin Potok and Leposavic.

Local Serbs rose up in protests opposing their election and exercise of duty by municipal facilities. The protests escalated, after local Serbs beat and injured KFOR members.
