Robert Elsie, the renowned albanologist, passed away on October 2, 2017.

The German-Canadian scholar studied Albanian folklore, culture, and history in depth. He highlighted the unique traits of the Albanian nation over centuries.

Elsie published extensively. His work covers spiritual, cultural, historical, and linguistic heritage. It remains a key reference for scholars of Albania.

Notable works include Migjeni, Freie Verse, Anthology of Modern Albanian Poetry (1993), History of Albanian Literature (1995, 1997, 2001), Der Kanun (2001), Historical Dictionary of Albania (2004, 2010), Historical Dictionary of Kosova (2004, 2011), and Albanian Literature: A Short History (2005, 2006).

Elsie served as a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo. He received the “Medal of Gratitude” (2013) and the “Golden Medal of the League of Prizren” for his work.

He died of motor neuron disease. In his will, he requested to be buried in the mountain village of Theth. This wish was fulfilled, honoring his strong bond with Albania.
