European Union Ambassador to Kosovo Dirk Schuebel has called for stronger cooperation between local and central institutions, stressing that closer coordination is important for Kosovo’s European integration process.

Schuebel met separately on Wednesday with the mayors of Kosovo’s four northern municipalities and with the Mayor of South Mitrovica, Faton Peci.

Following the meetings, the ambassador said discussions focused on the challenges municipalities face in delivering services to citizens and on ways to improve cooperation between local and central authorities.

“Improved cooperation between central and local institutions would contribute to Kosovo’s integration into the European Union,” Schuebel said.

He also reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting democratic local governance across Kosovo and helping municipalities strengthen their institutional capacities.

Meanwhile, during his first meeting with South Mitrovica Mayor Faton Peci, Schuebel highlighted the importance of coordination between local and central government structures.

He noted that many EU-related reforms are implemented at the municipal level, making local authorities key partners in advancing the European agenda.

“The EU is here to support local development and progress throughout the country,” Schuebel said.

The meetings underscored the European Union’s focus on local governance, institutional cooperation and the implementation of reforms that support Kosovo’s path toward closer integration with the EU.
