EU provides internet for the Balkans, the Commission makes available 15 million euros for 400 public spaces

The European Union has agreed to provide financial support for achieving free access in public areas of 400 municipalities in the Western Balkans, including Albania.

The decision taken for the region at the December European Council is in line with the one taken some time ago for public areas with free internet access in Europe.

While there is still no map of these areas in the region, public television has learned that the European Commission has proposed an amount made available for necessary investments totaling 15 million euros in total.

Part of what is called the digital transformation of the region, the European aim targets the increasing connectivity in the region to make it part of the European digital market.

Since October of last year, roaming charges in the region have decreased by 25-83 percent.

Since June of last year, 5 countries have signed the digital Europe program, which allows for financial support in areas such as advanced digital literacy, artificial intelligence, and digital innovations upon ratification within the country.
