Today marks 85 years since the death of Gjergj Fishta, one of the founding figures of Albanian literature.

Born a Franciscan friar and renowned as the “Albanian Homer,” Fishta died on December 30, 1940. He left a lasting mark on literature, journalism, linguistics, religious life, culture, and diplomacy.

Through his powerful writing, Fishta elevated the Albanian language. He gave voice to the nation’s historical epic. Moreover, he shaped a literary myth of resistance and national dignity. In doing so, he turned artistic expression into a true act of patriotism.

Above all, his masterpiece Lahuta e Malcís (The Highland Lute) stands as a cornerstone of Albanian literature. The work reflects the spirit, history, and identity of the Albanian people.

On this anniversary, the National Library honored Father Gjergj Fishta by highlighting his enduring legacy. His work continues to influence Albanian culture, language, and national awareness.

Meanwhile, the “Gjergj Fishta” Public Library in Lezhë recalled a passage from the funeral speech of Hoxhë Hafiz Ali Kraja. The speech emphasized that Fishta elevated the nation among other peoples. It also noted that the Albanian people bowed in respect, while the intellectual youth mourned his passing with deep sorrow.
