Following positive news from Sofia, Rama confirms participation in EU summit

Prime Minister Edi Rama has confirmed his participation in the EU summit to be held on June 23 and 24 in Brussels, following the positive news that came from Sofia to vote in favor of lifting the veto on North Macedonia. It seems that Rama’s position will be joined by Serbia and North Macedonia.
In a Twitter post, Rama writes that they will be there, although it is too early to be optimistic. Among other things, he emphasizes that he will change very little from the speech about Bulgaria, which he says has kidnapped two NATO countries, hindering the EU integration process.
Rama says that they changed their position after the former Bulgarian Prime Minister, at the same time the leader of the opposition, Boyko Borisov, asked the Prime Minister Krill Petkov to bring the proposal to open the way for the opening of negotiations for Albania and North Macedonia.
The Bulgarian veto on North Macedonia last June blocked the negotiation process for our country as well. The EU has been reluctant to decouple the two Western Balkan countries in the integration process, arguing that it would be better for regional stability if the two neighbors could move forward together.
Unlike previous conferences, Albania within the last two years, managed to overcome the skepticism of some member states who considered that Albania did not meet the conditions for the opening of membership negotiations. At the summit on June 23rd and 24th, the leaders of the 27 EU member states will also consider this week the applications for the status of candidate countries of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia.
