Former Prime Minister Fatos Nano died today at 73 after serious health problems. Consequently, Albania loses a key figure in its modern political history.

Nano was born on September 16, 1952, in Tirana. His family had strong ties to art and culture. Later, he studied Political Economy at the University of Tirana. Afterwards, he pursued research abroad, including at the Institute for Eastern European Economic Studies in Vienna.

He earned a Doctor of Science degree in economics in 1983. Then, he became Professor Doctor. In 2000, he received honorary doctorates from the International University of Milan and the University of Bari.

During the 1980s, Nano worked in state economic institutions. Moreover, he promoted gradual economic reforms. In 1990, Ramiz Alia appointed him Prime Minister. Thus, he began his political career in democratic Albania.

In June 1991, the Labour Party became the Socialist Party. Consequently, Nano became its first chairman. He guided the party toward a Western social-democratic model. Furthermore, he brought young intellectuals into leadership. He also integrated the party into the Socialist International.

In 1993, the Sali Berisha government arrested Nano on political charges. He spent nearly four years in prison. Meanwhile, he continued to lead the Socialist Party from his cell. As a result, he prepared the party for a return to power.

After the 1997 crisis, Nano returned to politics. Three months after leaving prison, he led the Socialists back to government. He served multiple terms as Prime Minister. In addition, he led the Socialist Party for 14 years, including the prison years.

In 2023, Prime Minister Edi Rama awarded Nano the Grand Cordon with Star of Public Gratitude. The award recognized his role in building a democratic state and modernizing the Socialist Party.

Nano is remembered as the founder of Albania’s modern left. He confronted the party’s past and transformed it toward European values and democratic standards. Consequently, his legacy continues to shape Albanian politics today.
