Hasani: Albania Ready to Join the EU Amid Global Challenges

Albanian Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Igli Hasani, said today that Albania is in its best position to join the European Union. He explained that current global and security challenges make this the right moment for EU enlargement. He added that countries like Albania can join quickly because of these shared concerns.

Hasani confirmed that Albania will soon open Chapter Group 5. He also mentioned that the Sixth Intergovernmental Conference is expected in the coming days. According to him, all parties have already agreed. Now, they are just finalizing the date with the European Commission.

Moreover, Hasani stated that the EU clearly sees the value of Albania’s membership. He said that EU institutions have often repeated their support for countries like Albania joining the Union.

Meanwhile, speaking about the Middle East, Hasani shared that Albania has evacuated several of its citizens from Israel. They arrived safely in Athens early this morning. Officials transported them from Tel Aviv to Egypt by land and then flew them to Greece. Albania also worked with Bulgarian authorities to assist citizens of Kosovo.

When asked about Albanians in Iran, Hasani said no one has asked for help. He noted that Albania has not had diplomatic ties with Iran for several years. Therefore, the government used unofficial sources to check for any needs. So far, there have been no requests.

Hasani also explained the reasons behind tensions with Iran. He said the issue was not the sheltering of MEK members. Instead, the conflict began after cyberattacks from Tehran. He called those attacks acts of aggression. Fortunately, Albanian institutions managed the situation with strong international support. Now, they are focused on strengthening cyber defense.

On the Israel–Palestine conflict, Hasani made Albania’s position clear. He said Albania supports peace and the two-state solution. However, he added that Albania stands firmly with Israel and does not support terrorist groups like Hamas.

In conclusion, Hasani said Albania will keep using its voice in international forums. He confirmed that Albania remains committed to peace and shared global values.
