On December 27, 1899, the renowned figure in Albanian literature, the poet, writer, and translator Llazar Gusho, famously known as Lasgush Poradeci, was born.

The man whose poetic voice resonated uniquely with the depths of human emotions continues to be a source of pride for his city, Pogradec, and for all Albanians, even today on the occasion of the 124th anniversary of his birth.

Lasgush Poradeci was born into a family with strong patriotic traditions. At the age of 10, he began his studies in Manastir and later continued in Athens, where he completed his high school education.

In 1921, he traveled to Romania to pursue higher studies. In Bucharest, he became involved with the Patriotic Movement of the Albanian Colony, where he befriended Asdren and other Albanian patriots, eventually being elected as the general secretary of the Colony. In the summer of 1924, the Government of Fan Noli awarded him a scholarship, enabling him to complete his higher studies at the Faculty of Romano-German Philology in Graz, Austria.

He is regarded as one of our greatest lyricists, celebrated for the sensitivity and poetic tenderness through which he expressed his verses about Albania and love.

Lasgush Poradeci never compromised his art, which led to a difficult economic situation and indifference from the official press during his time.

Following the poet’s passing on November 12, 1987, and the change of the system, the verses of Lasgush Poradeci continue to serve as nourishment for generations, preserving his legacy and impact on Albanian literature.

Poradeci authored two volumes of poetry: “Dance of the Stars” in 1933 and “The Star of the Heart” in 1937, both published in the Romanian capital. He composed over 100 poems, including some focused on themes of love. Known for his affection for archaic words, folk customs, as well as new lexical experiments, Kuteli, the editor of “The Star of the Heart,” described Poradeci as “the only Albanian poet who thought, spoke, and wrote solely in the Albanian language.”

Lasgush Poradeci has been the subject of numerous writings and countless publications. Literary historians, critics, essayists, linguists, educators, writers, and journalists have extensively written about his life and works.

A year ago, in homage to the esteemed poet, the Ministry of Culture, through a special fund, reached an agreement with the descendants of Lasgush Poradeci for the acquisition of his personal library. This acquisition aimed to integrate his collection as part of the National Library, honoring his legacy and contributions to Albanian literature.

The acquired library consists of a total of 650 book titles in various foreign languages as well as in Albanian, which were utilized by the poet himself. These volumes contain his notes or bear the autographs of the donors, adding significant value to the collection.

This invaluable library is currently serving scholars and students, providing a rich resource for research and study purposes.
