Incident in Skopje: Osmani Criticizes Airport Security, AAC Defends Compliance with International Rules

Kosovan Presidency has reacted to the report by the Civil Aviation Agency of North Macedonia (ACC), which states that authorities in Skopje followed procedures and did not breach international regulations.
Presidency emphasizes that North Macedonian authorities violated international norms, noting that no airport would require a head of state’s phone to be handed over for scanning.
“In other countries, neither personal luggage nor the head of state’s personal phone is checked. From our extensive experience with other travels, we have never encountered such checks. North Macedonia is the only country that refuses to apply customary international law and conventions related to heads of state. The president’s bag was placed in the scanner, but no professional standards were followed. The demand to scan the president’s phone represents a potential breach of national security,” reads the Presidency’s statement.
According to Kosovan Presidency, these actions by Skopje authorities forced President Osmani to alter her return itinerary to Kosova.
“The change in travel plans was due to the security team’s assessment that the airport lacked basic security conditions,” the statement continues.
Civil Aviation Agency of North Macedonia asserts that Skopje airport staff acted professionally and adhered to rules during President Osmani’s transit through the airport on August 1.
On the same day, President Osmani accused the airport authorities of violating international practices by obstructing her during her passage through Skopje airport.
