Informal leaders meeting of NATO Allies from the region in Skopje: Main discussion on security issues within the Western Balkans region

The informal leaders’ meeting of NATO allies from the region has commenced, focusing on broader security issues concerning the Western Balkans. The agenda also encompasses discussions regarding Russian military aggression against Ukraine and its activities in the region.

The hosts, Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, welcomed President of Croatia Zoran Milanovic, along with the Prime Ministers of Albania and Montenegro, Edi Rama and Milojko Spajic, respectively.

In a statement to the media prior to the meeting’s commencement, North Macedonian Prime Minister Kovacevski highlighted that hosting this meeting signifies our country’s role as a pivotal security factor in the region. Additionally, as a committed NATO member, it underscores our dedication and full focus on fulfilling our obligations within the NATO alliance.

“In today’s meeting, our agenda includes discussions on regional security matters. Additionally, we will address pertinent topics concerning the conflict in Ukraine, the ongoing situation in the Gaza Strip, and other matters pivotal to the sustained establishment of peace, stability, and security in our region, as well as across Europe and globally,” emphasized Kovacevski.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, during his official visit to Skopje, praised North Macedonia for its success in various aspects. He specifically highlighted it as a successful multi-ethnic society, showcasing to the region and the world that individuals from diverse backgrounds can coexist peacefully.

“North Macedonia holds a significant position within the alliance, evident by the NATO leaders’ summit being hosted here today. Our discussions with the leaders will encompass security matters within the region as well as the challenges that extend beyond the borders of this area,” stated Stoltenberg.

Apart from Prime Minister Kovacevski and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the meeting also includes the participation of Croatia’s President Zoran Milanovic and the Prime Ministers of Albania, Edi Rama, and Montenegro, Milojko Spajic. Regrettably, due to health reasons, the Prime Minister of Slovenia, Robert Golob, is not able to attend.

Montenegrin Prime Minister Spajic, upon arrival, expressed his satisfaction that his inaugural trip is to the NATO summit in North Macedonia. He emphasized that North Macedonia, situated in the heart of the Balkans, underscores the alliance’s commitment to the region.

Upon arrival, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama expressed his satisfaction about the regional presence at the gathering amidst global turmoil. He highlighted the significance of regional unity, especially during a period of worldwide crises that could potentially impact the region.
