International bid for Butrint, the winning company is expected to bring new life to the archaeological area

Companies with solid experience are requested by the Butrint Management Foundation to submit bids for the Archaeological Conservation Management Plan, and Hydrological and Ecological Study of the Butrint World Heritage Area.

The foundation that was co-founded by the Ministry of Culture and the Albanian-American Development Foundation (AADF) operates in the field of cultural heritage and aims to manage the cultural heritage areas of Butrint National Park.

Assessed as property of universal value, the world heritage of Butrint needs the necessary financial means and specialized staff for its preservation and development.

The Integrated Management Plan will take over the site efficiently and with due care during the interventions necessary to preserve, enhance and maintain this site in the long run.

The bid will aim at an integrated approach to the archaeological and hydrological conservation as well as ecological studies, with a focus on the harmonization of archaeological assets, hydrological and ecological conditions.

Since 1992, Butrint has been one of the most studied and published archaeological sites in the country, led largely by the work of the Butrinti Foundation.

The Integrated Management Plan for Butrint was prepared for the Albanian Government in 2018. In 2020, UNESCO agreed to this plan and, in 2021, based on the recommendations of the report, the Albanian Government, with the financial support of AADF, created the Foundation for the Management of Butrint (FMB) to implement all future works that will to be financed by the Foundation.

As this project continues, there are various objections in political circles regarding this management plan.
