Isa Boletini, a national hero and key leader of Albania’s independence movement, was born on January 15, 1864, in the village of Boletin, Kosovo.

From an early age, he grew up in a family known for strong patriotism in Mitrovica and across Kosovo. As a result, he became one of the most determined fighters of the Independence era. Over time, Albanians came to regard him as a historical legend.

Moreover, together with Ismail Qemali, Hasan Prishtina, and Bajram Curri, Boletini led the anti-Ottoman resistance. Through sustained pressure, they forced the Ottoman authorities into negotiations. Consequently, the Albanian side achieved its main goal: the declaration of independence in 1912.

For this reason, generations continue to remember his powerful words: “I am well when Albania is well.”

Meanwhile, at just 17 years old, Boletini joined the Albanian League of Prizren. Shortly after, he fought in the Battle of Slivova on April 22, 1881, against Ottoman forces. Later on, he supported Haxhi Zeka in founding the League of Peja between 1899 and 1900. In this context, he led the Mitrovica delegation and resisted both Ottoman rule and neighboring chauvinist pressures.

At the same time, Boletini strongly supported the Albanian National Awakening. In particular, he promoted education and built the first Albanian-language school in Boletin and the Shala region.

In 1913, he joined the Albanian delegation to London. There, however, he firmly opposed the Great Powers’ decision to divide Albanian territories.

Ultimately, Montenegrin forces killed Isa Boletini near Podgorica on January 23, 1916. Nevertheless, his legacy continues to inspire Albanians today.
