Italian Public Broadcaster, RAI Launches Programs in Arbëresh Language

For the first time, Italy’s public broadcaster RAI will air programs in the Arbëresh language starting September 21. RAI Calabria will produce reports and broadcasts to preserve the identity of the Arbëresh community in Italy.

Journalist Alba Kepi in Rome said this was the result of an institutional effort that began in 2022, supported by Italian institutions and approved in the Senate. Funding for the initiative was included in the 2024 public broadcaster’s budget.

The first program will air Sunday on Rai 3, from 9:30 to 10:30, followed by a daily 30-minute radio program on Rai Radio 1. The TV show will feature visits to Arbëresh towns, while the radio program will highlight values, traditions, and language preserved for nearly six centuries.

Kepi said this is the first time Italy’s public broadcaster dedicates a series to the Arbëresh community. She noted the language is at risk due to youth migration, and the broadcasts aim to help preserve it.

The initial project will last 13 months, with the possibility of extension if successful.
