KFOR: Situation in Kosova Stable but Risks of Escalation Remain

The Commander of NATO’s Force in Kosova (KFOR), Lieutenant General Enrico Barduani, reported that the security situation is stable, yet still exposed to risks of sudden escalation due to unresolved issues.
Barduani presented his assessment at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, during sessions with the Military Committee and the North Atlantic Council. He underlined that KFOR has helped maintain stability and avoid incidents that could have led to unrest. He stressed that the mission has created a security framework to support ongoing diplomatic efforts.
The KFOR commander emphasized that the mission remains reinforced. According to him, this includes temporary deployment of reserve troops, regular patrols, engagement with local communities, training activities, and close cooperation with the Kosova Security Organizations, international partners, and the Serbian Armed Forces.
He also highlighted NATO’s and KFOR’s continued support for the EU-facilitated dialogue between Belgrade and Prishtina. He noted that lasting security in Kosova will not come through military means but through political solutions.
In Brussels, Barduani also met General Sean Clancy, Chairman of the EU Military Committee. The two reviewed cooperation between KFOR, EULEX, and Operation Althea EUFOR in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
