Knaus Calls for Extraordinary Session on Kosova by the Foreign Ministers

Gerald Knaus from the European Stability Initiative has urged foreign ministers to schedule an extraordinary session on Kosova.

In a tweet, Knaus highlighted the absurdity of stalling Kosova’s progress towards Council of Europe membership.

“Foreign Ministers in Strasbourg need to set a new date for an extraordinary meeting within weeks to vote on Kosova’s application as soon as it advances on the issue of the Association of Serb-majority municipalities. This would send a clear message to Serbia that Kosovs’s statehood is stable and enjoys the full support of European democracies,” he wrote.

Knaus also cautioned that it would be a significant error for foreign ministers to overlook the “Ahtisaari formula for peace and the recommendation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe” on May 17.

He praised the Kosova Government’s proposal concerning the Association and its link to Council membership, describing it as very good.

The agenda for the May 16-17 meeting has excluded Kosova from the discussion.

Council of Europe spokesperson Daniel Holtgen stated that the issue of Kosova is not on the agenda of the Committee of Ministers and that it is currently unknown when it might be addressed.
