Kosova Assembly Speaker Election Fails Once Again

For the fifth consecutive time, Kosova’s efforts to elect a Speaker of the Assembly have been unsuccessful, marking a situation that has raised concerns across the political spectrum. Memli Krasniqi, leader of the Democratic Party of Kosova (PDK), described the ongoing deadlock as a regrettable and unprecedented challenge for Kosova.

While Krasniqi did not specify whether his party would have supported either Shqipe Selimi or Saranda Bogujevci had they been nominated for the position, he emphasized the need for a more widely acceptable candidate.

He underlined that the Self-Determination Movement (LVV), which holds the right to propose a candidate for Speaker, has faced criticism for its insistence on a particular individual, which some feel has become a point of contention. While the LVV holds the right to nominate, the process has raised concerns about the imposition of their choice on opposition MPs.

Albulena Haxhiu, the LVV’s nominee for the Speaker’s role, once again failed to secure sufficient votes. In the latest vote, Haxhiu garnered 57 votes, mainly from the LVV and community representatives. However, 46 votes against came from the PDK, LDK, and AAK, while three MPs from the Nisma (The Initiative for Kosova) party abstained.

Assembly is scheduled to reconvene for its constitutive session on Friday at 10:00 AM, where further attempts to resolve the impasse will be made.
