Kosovo commemorates the Recak massacre

Numerous citizens, government leaders and various politicians commemorated the victims of the Recan massacre on Saturday. Prime Minister Albin Kurti paid homage to Recak with his cabinet. The leaders of AKM and LDK have also honored the victims of this massacre.
Many citizens of Kosovo have honored the victims of the massacre in Recak, carried out by Serbian forces 23 years ago. They say that on this day they remember one of the most horrific atrocities committed after World War II in Europe.
On January 15, 1999, the inhabitants of Recak, Shtime, woke up early in the morning from gunshots, which had become common in that period. On that day, Serbian forces killed 45 Albanian civilians, which was considered a massacre by the then head of the OSCE verification mission in Kosovo, William Walker.
Serbia is consistently denying the massacre carried out by its forces in Recak. The US and the EU have condemned the statements of Serbian officials denying the massacre in Recak, in which Kosovo Albanian civilians were killed. “The US State Department last year stated that the atrocities that took place in Recak in January 1999, including the massacre of civilians, are well documented.”
Meanwhile, the EU had stated that the fabrication of the events that took place in Recak is contrary to the values of the European Union and the project of integration of the Western Balkans. The Recak massacre was one of the decisive moments for the launch of NATO bombing against the Serbian army targets, on March 24, 1999. Former US diplomat William Walker had stated that the attempt of officials in Serbia to present the massacre in Recak as a fabricated event, it is done because some current officials in Belgrade have been involved in crimes against the civilian population in Kosovo.
