Kosovo Honors Jashari Family’s Legacy with Nationwide Memorial Activities

In early March 1998, Serbia launched a major attack on Drenica, focusing on Prekaz, the heart of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). This event, particularly the siege of Prekaz on March 4-5, marked a turning point in the Kosovo conflict, drawing international attention to the situation.
On March 5, 1998, Commander Adem Jashari and his family were martyred in a heroic act of resistance, symbolizing Kosovo’s struggle for freedom. The Jashari family’s sacrifice became a defining moment in Kosovo’s journey toward independence.
Prekaz and Drenica had been under constant threat from Serbian paramilitary forces since 1991, with repeated attacks on the Jashari family. The final assault in March 1998 claimed the lives of 55 people, including 22 close relatives of Adem Jashari. The only survivors were Bashkimi, Rifat Jashari’s son, and Besarta, Hamza Jashari’s daughter.
Today, the events of March 1998 are commemorated annually, with memorials and activities organized by the Government of Kosovo to honor the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for Kosovo’s freedom.
