The Kosovo Agency of Statistics has announced that the population registration process in the country will start today, a process that will last until May 17th.

In the media announcement, it is stated that participation in the registration is required by law, and in case of refusal, individuals may be penalized in the amount ranging from 30 euros to 2,000 euros per person.

This time, the diaspora will also be subjected to registration.

According to the Kosovo Statistics Agency, the information collected during the population census will serve as a basis for critical decision-making, affecting every aspect of life, from health care, education, infrastructure development to resource allocation and policy planning.

From 5 April to 10 April 2024, census workers (enumerators) will visit the residential areas and more flats/houses to distribute materials such as: leaflet, information letter and to inform you of Registration Area. During this period, an interview with any household may take place. From April 10, 2024, general registration will begin.

The interview must take place in the residential facility of or near the residence/home of the respondent (citizen). The interview can take place in: apartment/house, entrance, corridor, in a bar near the apartment/house, if there is a garden, terrace, balcony or similar places.

Depending on the number of household members, age and gender, the expectation is that the interview in a household with 4 members will last about 30 minutes.

Data is recommended to be obtained from each member of adult age (over 16 years) if he/she is present during the interview. In other cases, a member of the household may provide the data.

The last population census in Kosovo was done in 2011, while the census that was supposed to be done in 2021, has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the 2011 census, the total number of inhabitants in Kosovo is estimated to be around 1.8 million.

This census did not include the inhabitants of the Serb-majority municipalities in the north of Kosovo – Leposaviq, Zubin Potok, Zveçan and North Mitrovica – since at that time they had rejected the process.

Purpose of registration

Registration helps in understanding demographic changes, planning public services such as: schools and hospitals, provision of different services by municipalities, transport, budget allocations, allocation and limitations of state personnel in an area or municipality, as well as for future planning. It is essential for shaping the future of communities and the nation. An accurate Census ensures fair representation and distribution of government funds.
