Kosovo shines at Mediterranean Games and prepares to host 2030 edition

The Mediterranean Games are a traditional multi-sport event held every four years. First, they bring together athletes from member countries of the International Committee of Mediterranean Games. Across three continents—Europe, Asia, and Africa—competitors compete in dozens of Olympic and non-Olympic sports.

This year’s program features more than 24 sports, including athletics, swimming, combat sports, and team events. In recent editions, over 3,000 athletes have competed, demonstrating the Games’ growing popularity.

Kosovo has increased its participation since debuting in 2018. For example, Kosovar athletes won medals mainly in judo and boxing, which firmly placed the country on the regional competitive map.

Kosovo continues to expand its role in sports and institutions. Meanwhile, young athletes gain opportunities to excel internationally. In addition, the country builds new connections with sports federations across Mediterranean nations.

Kosovo treats the Mediterranean Games as more than a competition. Athletes showcase talent, dedication, and national spirit. Since its debut, Kosovo’s athletes have excelled in judo, boxing, and athletics. Their victories raised the Kosovo flag on international podiums and, as a result, inspired young generations.

Nora Gjakova and Distria Krasniqi symbolize Kosovar success. Both won gold medals at the 2018 Mediterranean Games in Tarragona, Spain. Specifically, Nora triumphed in the under-57 kg category, while Distria won the under-52 kg class. Consequently, they became two of Kosovo’s most celebrated medalists.

Other athletes shone as well. Laura Fazliu and Loriana Kuka won gold, while Flaka Loxha, Akil Gjakova, and boxer Shpejtim Bajoku brought home bronze. Together, these achievements strengthened Kosovo’s position among Mediterranean competitors.

Kosovo has now won ten Mediterranean Games medals: six gold, one silver, and three bronze. These results show that even a young nation can excel internationally and, at the same time, inspire future generations.

Looking ahead, in 2030 Prishtina will host the Mediterranean Games for the first time. Kosovar athletes will compete at home. Moreover, the Kosovo flag will wave on podiums, in stadiums, and across city squares, leaving a legacy that inspires generations to come.
