Kosovo Wins Right to Host Mediterranean Games

Kosovo won the right to host the Mediterranean Games after a long diplomatic and sporting process that began after its acceptance into the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2014. This recognition opened the door for Kosovo to join the global Olympic family and apply to host major international events, including the Mediterranean Games.

The process officially started when the Kosovo Olympic Committee, in cooperation with state institutions, submitted a bid proposing Prishtina as the host city. The application highlighted state support, financial backing, plans to build and modernize sports infrastructure, and a long-term vision for using these investments.

The International Committee of Mediterranean Games (ICMG) awarded Kosovo the hosting rights. They evaluated technical aspects of the bid and recognized its symbolic and developmental significance. This marks a historic moment: the first time a new state gains trust to organize such a large multisport event.

Ultimately, Kosovo succeeded because it convinced international organizers of its institutional capacity, political backing, and commitment to turn the Games into a national project—sporting, diplomatic, and developmental.
