Nine years ago, Albania bid farewell to one of its most eminent historians, scholars, and academics—Kristo Frashëri (1920–2016).

Born in Istanbul on December 4, 1920, Frashëri and his family repatriated to Tirana in 1927. His academic journey began at the Faculty of Economic Sciences at the University of Florence in 1940. Amidst the turbulence of World War II, he was interned by the fascist occupation in 1942 and later joined the partisan resistance in 1943. From 1945 to 1952, he worked at the State Bank of Albania before fully dedicating himself to academia. Between 1951 and 1955, he pursued higher studies at the Faculty of History and Philology, later serving as a researcher and professor in the nation’s most esteemed institutions. In 1997, he was appointed Vice President of the Albanian Academy of Sciences, a position he held until 1999.

Frashëri’s scholarly contributions span nearly every era of Albanian history, from antiquity to modern times. His prolific body of work includes numerous academic articles, historical treatises, documentary volumes, and monographs, shedding light on pivotal events, figures, and processes. Among his major works are studies on medieval Albanian state formations, the Ottoman feudal system in Albania, the Albanian National Renaissance, and key historical figures such as Abdyl and Sami Frashëri.

After 1990, he enriched Albanian historiography with landmark publications, including The League of Prizren (1878–1881) (1997), Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg: Life and Work (2002), History of Tirana (2004), The Albanian National Identity (2006), The Proclamation of Albania’s Independence (1912) (2008), and History of Albanian Civilization (2008).

As a professor at the University of Tirana, Frashëri played a crucial role in shaping new generations of historians. His intellectual legacy endures, illuminating the past and guiding the future of Albanian historical thought. He passed away on January 31, 2016, leaving behind an indelible mark on Albanian historiography.
