Today marks 149 years since the birth of Kristo Luarasi, a key figure of Albania’s National Renaissance.

First, Luarasi dedicated his life to the national cause. He promoted Albanian education and language, supported the press, and advanced publications that fostered independence.

Born in Luaras, Kolonjë, he began his patriotic work in the 1890s. From 1892 to 1894, he taught Albanian at one of the first Albanian schools in Luaras, founded by Petro Nini Luarasi.

However, facing persecution from Ottoman and Greek authorities, he emigrated to Bucharest and later Sofia. There, he joined the society “Dëshira” and, together with Kostë Trebicka, founded the printing press “Mbrothësia” to publish textbooks, patriotic works, and newspapers.

In 1907, he collaborated with Bajo and Çerçiz Topulli to organize armed groups and published Sami Frashëri’s work, “Albania: What It Was, What It Is, and What It Will Become”.

Furthermore, through the newspaper Liri e Shqipërisë, he supported the 1911–1912 uprisings. He also worked in Albanian diaspora communities to prepare the Assembly of Vlorë and Albania’s Declaration of Independence in November 1912.

After 1920, Luarasi settled in Tirana, continuing his publishing and cultural work until his death in 1934.
