Kurti from London: Kosovo ready to accept asylum seekers rejected by the United Kingdom

Kosovo has expressed its willingness to accept asylum seekers rejected by the United Kingdom. This comes as part of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s plan to create “return centers” for migrants.

During the Western Balkans leaders’ summit in London, Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti said his country is in talks with UK authorities to determine how to implement the plan. He emphasized that Pristina sees the move as a friendly and political gesture toward London. In return, Kosovo seeks increased support for national security against threats from Serbia and Russia.

“We want to help the United Kingdom. We see this as a friendly and political duty. Our capacities are limited, but we are ready to contribute. Currently, our interior ministry teams and legal experts are in regular communication to find a smooth and mutually beneficial way to implement this,” Kurti said.

He added that Kosovo expects support from the UK in the form of security equipment and intelligence sharing to face regional threats.

“We mainly want security support, either through strategic agreements or through equipment and projects we can carry out. Our teams are working on this, and I believe we will reach a successful outcome,” he noted.

Kurti also highlighted that Kosovo’s offer reflects gratitude toward the UK, which helped the country during the peacekeeping intervention against Slobodan Milosevic’s regime in the late 1990s.

“You helped us greatly, and we will never forget it,” Kurti concluded.
