Kurti: Kosovo Has No Plan B for EU Membership

Kosovo’s Acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, participated today in a discussion organized by the Center for European Policy Studies (CEPS) in partnership with the Embassy of Kosovo in Brussels. The event, titled “Kosovo’s Path to the EU: Advancing Democracy, Security, and Economic Growth”, featured Kurti’s opening speech followed by a Q&A session with the audience.
During his address, Kurti highlighted that the European Union (EU) has set the foundation for a closer relationship and a structured path for the membership of Western Balkan countries. He emphasized that Kosovo has no “Plan B” for its EU membership, stressing that EU enlargement should be strategic, merit-based, and realistic.
“For over a decade, the people of Kosovo have aspired to join the EU—not just for prosperity, but for the values it represents, our shared interests, and the opportunity to contribute as a member,” Kurti stated. He further noted that Kosovo has undertaken reforms, strengthened its institutions, and aligned itself with EU standards. “Kosovo does not have a Plan B for EU membership. We have proven ourselves as a reliable EU partner and are firmly committed to our European future. As a beacon of democracy in the region, we have shown our dedication whenever given an equal opportunity. It’s time for the EU to recognize Kosovo as part of its future.”
Kurti reiterated that Kosovo’s strategic goals remain EU and NATO membership, with the country fully aligned with the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy and its values, demonstrated through ongoing reforms. He also stressed Kosovo’s modern legal framework that guarantees the protection of human rights, including minority rights.
The event was moderated by Dr. Tinatin Akhvlediani, a researcher at CEPS.
