Lajcak after the meeting with President Vucic: Violence must be avoided!

The envoy of the European Union for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak, said on November 5 that the meeting the night before with the Serbian president, Aleksandar Vucic, was long and difficult, but fair.

According to him, the parties have agreed that all agreements reached in Brussels must be implemented. “I count on the responsible behavior of all, to show restraint for safety and stability. Violence must be avoided”, said Lajçak through a post on Twitter.

He made these statements a few hours after the members of the Serbian List – the largest party of Serbs in Kosovo – would decide whether they would leave the institutions of Kosovo.

This warning came after the decision of the Kosovo authorities to suspend the director of the Kosovo Police for the northern region, Nenad Gjuric, who refused to implement the decision of the Government of Kosovo to re-register cars with license plates issued by Serbia in RKS – Republic of Kosovo.

Serbian List has a ministerial position in the Government of Kosovo, led by Albin Kurti. In the Assembly of Kosovo, this party, which has great support from the Serbian president, Aleksandar Vucic, has all ten seats reserved for the Serbian community.

The Government of Kosovo has started on November 1 to implement its plan in three stages for the re-registration of cars with license plates issued by Serbia. The first phase involves reprimanding the drivers, the second involves a fine of up to 150 euros for those drivers, and the third a probationary license plate.

The Serbian List has warned of fierce resistance from the moment when the first license plate fine would be imposed. The implementation of this plan is expected to end on April 21 and, from that date, only cars with RKS license plates will be allowed in circulation.

The US condemns the destruction of property of persons who are equipped with RKS license plates.
The issue of illegal license plates caused tensions in northern Kosovo last summer, when some local Serbs erected barricades in protest at the re-registration process.
