Lajçak: Steps must be taken to de-escalate the situation in the north of Kosovo

The emissary of the European Union for the Kosova-Serbia dialogue, Miroslav Lajçak, met with the Deputy Secretary General of NATO, Mircea Geoana, with whom he talked about the situation in the north of Kosova.
Lajçak stated that they have agreed on the need to take steps to de-escalate the situation in the northern part of Kosova.
“It was useful to meet the Deputy Secretary General of NATO, Mircea Geoana, to discuss the situation in the north of Kosova. We agreed that immediate de-escalation steps should be taken. I emphasized this when I addressed the NATO ambassadors,” the Slovak diplomat writes.
In Zveçan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq, Serbs are protesting against the entry of new Albanian mayors into municipal facilities, as well as the presence of the Kosovo Police.
As a result of the protesters’ actions, several policemen and KFOR members were injured. Also, vehicles of the Kosova Police and the media were burned and damaged.
The situation in these municipalities became tense on Friday, May 26, when the sworn mayors were forced to enter their work offices under the assistance of the Police.
This action of Kosova’s institutions has been criticized by the United States of America and the European Union until they demanded an immediate extension of the situation in the north.
