Lajčak Stresses EU Integration Tied to Kosovo-Serbia Normalization

Miroslav Lajčak, the European Union’s Special Representative for the Kosovo-Serbia Dialogue, emphasized that the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia is directly linked to both countries’ EU integration. In discussions with Kosovo’s chief negotiator, Besnik Bislimi, and Serbia’s chief negotiator, Petar Petković, Lajčak reiterated that these two processes are interconnected.
Lajčak highlighted key issues that need to be addressed for the successful implementation of the Ohrid Agreement, including reducing tensions, responsibility for the 2023 attacks, reintegration of Serbs in Kosovo, the formation of the Association of Serb-majority Municipalities, and the recognition of Kosovo’s documents and symbols.
The discussions followed the successful conclusion of negotiations on the 2023 Missing Persons Declaration, which aims to bring closure to families affected by the Kosovo war. Despite formal commitments, however, practical steps for implementing this agreement have yet to be realized.
Additionally, Lajčak announced the creation of a Joint Commission to address ongoing issues in the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, set to begin in January 2025.
