Lake Shkodër expected to join UNESCO

TIRANA, December 10 – Prime Minister Edi Rama shared footage of Lake Shkodër, highlighting its symbolic bird, the Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus).

In a social media post, Rama said the lake’s territory was expected to join the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves list soon. He described the move as an important step for biodiversity protection and sustainable tourism promotion.

Lake Shkodër is the largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula by surface area. It lies on the border between Albania and Montenegro. Its size varies by season, reaching about 530 km² during high rainfall periods.

The lake receives water from several sources and rivers. It flows into the Adriatic Sea via the Buna River. Meanwhile, experts highlighted that the lake hosts rich biodiversity and ranks among Europe’s most important freshwater habitats.

It shelters over 280 bird species, including rare and protected ones. The Dalmatian pelican is classified as globally endangered. Surrounding areas contain freshwater vegetation, wetlands, and habitats for migratory species.

In Albania, the lake and surrounding zones have been declared a National Park. Both Albania and Montenegro worked to strengthen cross-border protection. Currently, the area was under procedures to join the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve network.

The lake serves as an important source for traditional fishing, sustainable tourism, and recreation. In addition, nearby settlements hold historical significance, ancient traditions, and rich cultural heritage.
