On December 27, 1899, Llazar Gusho, widely recognized by his pen name Lasgush Poradeci, was born in Pogradec, Albania. An iconic figure in Albanian literature, Poradeci made his mark as a poet, writer, and translator whose verses continue to resonate with the complexities of the human experience. On the 124th anniversary of his birth, his legacy remains a source of pride for Pogradec and the Albanian people.

Born into a family steeped in patriotic traditions, Lasgush Poradeci’s passion for education and national identity was evident from a young age. At just 10 years old, he began his studies in Manastir, and later, he continued his education in Athens, completing his high school studies. In 1921, he traveled to Romania to further his education. It was in Bucharest that he became active in the Patriotic Movement of the Albanian Colony, where he befriended notable figures like Asdren and other Albanian patriots. Poradeci’s commitment to the Albanian cause led to his election as the general secretary of the colony. In 1924, the Albanian government, led by Fan Noli, awarded him a scholarship, enabling him to pursue higher studies at the Faculty of Romano-German Philology in Graz, Austria.

Poradeci is celebrated as one of Albania’s greatest lyric poets, revered for the emotional depth and poetic tenderness through which he expressed his love for Albania and its people. His verses often touched on themes of national pride, love, and the beauty of the Albanian landscape. Despite his talent, he never compromised his art for fame or wealth, which led to difficult financial conditions and a lack of recognition from the official press during his lifetime.

Following his death on November 12, 1987, and the changes in Albania’s political landscape, Lasgush Poradeci’s work continued to inspire new generations. His poetry became a symbol of resilience and national identity in post-communist Albania.

Poradeci published two volumes of poetry: Dance of the Stars in 1933 and The Star of the Heart in 1937, both released in Bucharest. He wrote over 100 poems, many of which explored love and national pride. Known for his use of archaic words and folk traditions, he was described by his editor, Kuteli, as “the only Albanian poet who thought, spoke, and wrote solely in the Albanian language.”

A year ago, the Ministry of Culture honored Lasgush Poradeci by acquiring his personal library, a collection of 650 books in Albanian and foreign languages. This library, which contains books with Poradeci’s notes and autographs, now serves as an invaluable resource for scholars and students, further solidifying his impact on Albanian literature.
