Latin paleography/ A summer school for deciphering the Latin script opened for the first time in Albania

Latin paleography is concerned with the study and decipherment of Latin writing, mainly by hand, at all times. Although until now it has been an auxiliary science of history, it is increasingly being treated as a science on its own, and is becoming a key path that must be traversed to discover many secrets and mysteries of the Middle Ages.
“It is a discipline that comes a little late in Albanian historiography because Latin paleography is the bridge that connects us with Europe, given that Latin was the official language of all of Europe,” says professor, doctor Etleva Lala, researcher of Latin paleography.
In Albania, apart from the political field, many aspects of life during this period, especially social or religious life, remain dark and unstudied. But the main challenge of historians who approach this period remains the correct decipherment of hundreds of painted manuscripts, in which researchers encounter strange traps, due to which they can make wrong decipherments and give history a different course. Until today, Albania has lacked the tradition of studying Latin paleography, for the needs of which, this year, for the first time, the paleographic summer school of the Latin language was held, organized by professor Dr. Etleva Lala, a scrupulous researcher in this field in cooperation with the management structures of the University of Tirana.
