Law on Languages – Ahmeti Urges Mickoski: Interethnic Tensions Will Lead to Insecurity

Democratic Union for Integration in North Mecedonia (BDI) leader Ali Ahmeti has sent a letter to Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, who also leads VMRO-DPMNE ruling party, urging him to uphold the Ohrid Agreement and ensure that his government does not disrupt interethnic coexistence in North Macedonia.
Discussions around a potential repeal of the “Law on Languages” have sparked reactions from Albanian political parties in North Macedonia, warning that any changes to the law could undermine the official use of the Albanian language in the country.
In his letter, Ahmeti underscored the region’s fragile stability, stating, “The Ohrid Agreement, which has promoted greater interethnic understanding, is not just a political issue but a foundation for our multiethnic democracy and democratic progress”.
Previously, Prime Minister Mickoski labeled the VLEN coalition’s proposal to establish an Albanian Academy of Sciences as “an ethnic and national matter that is not a priority for his government”.
