London hosts Western Balkans EU integration conference today

London is hosting a key Western Balkans EU integration conference today, bringing together leaders from the region and European partners. The event aims to advance regional cooperation, strengthen economic growth, and promote reforms aligned with European Union standards.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and other top European officials will join the discussions, while the United Kingdom, despite no longer being an EU member, emphasizes its role in supporting stability, security, and development in the Balkans.
The format focuses on Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Serbia.
Although the United Kingdom is no longer an EU member, it will host the conference. The UK aims to promote regional cooperation, increase security, and support economic growth.
The EU continues to require reforms from these countries as a condition for membership. Progress has been uneven, and some nations have stalled for decades, causing frustration.
Recently, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul urged that the process move forward. He warned that China and Russia could exploit delays if EU membership remains slow.
The UK added that migration will also be a major focus of the talks. According to a government statement, boosting economic growth in the six Western Balkan countries could reduce irregular migration, strengthen the UK’s borders, and keep its transit routes secure.
