MacShane for Financial Times: EU states need to accept Kosova isn’t a Serb colony, Rama is right

The European Union must accept that Kosova is not a Serb colony and the Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama is right when he says that “Russia wants to create a small Donbas in the north of Kosova”, writes Denis MacShane, former minister of the United Kingdom for the Balkans during the years 2001-2005, according to “The Financial Times” (FT).
In a letter published in the FT, the British politician supports the idea that France, Germany and the US should re-engage in the north of Kosova to avoid more serious consequences.
“The Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, is very right when he says that Vladimir Putin, assisted by the strongman of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, would like to create a small Donbas in the north of Kosova”, writes MacShane.
“Rama calls for France, Germany and the US to re-engage. They have tried and failed. Four Nato and EU member states, Spain, Greece, Slovakia and Romania, back the Putin-Vucic line of not recognizing Kosova. This weakens the new Balkan state in asserting authority over its terriory”, adds the former minister in this letter.
“Perhaps France’s Emmanuel Macron, German chancellor Olaf Scholz and the US president Joe Biden could have a word with their counterparts in Madrid, Athens, Bratislava and Bucharest and urge these Nato and EU leaders to drop the fantasy that Kosova does not exist and might one day return to being a colony of Belgrade,” concludes the letter of Denis MacShane, former UK minister for the Balkans during the years 2001-2005.
