Map of archaeological monuments around Tepelena is expanding

In the framework of the Archaeological Landscapes project in the Memaliaj-Tepelenë area, excavations are currently underway at the Matohasanaj fortress.
The project is a collaboration between the Institute of Archaeology (ASHSH) and Sweet Briar College, USA, co-directed by Sabina Veseli and Erin Pitt, focusing on surveys and excavations at the Matohasanaj fortress and its surroundings. The project utilizes Lidar methodology and aims to create an integrated and georeferenced site plan.
Excavations conducted so far have uncovered a building that appears to have had a public function, based on its layout and construction techniques.
In collaboration with the Regional Directorate of National Culture in Gjirokastër, which manages the fortress, the project aims to expand the map of monuments in the Tepelenë area.
